Nasal Mast Cell Stabilizers

Mast cell stabilizers can be used to prevent or treat allergies and are usually used in the nose several times daily. Mast cell stabilizers interfere with the inflammatory process by stabilizing mast cell membranes and inhibiting the activation and release of mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes from them. They are most effective when used before coming into contact with substances that cause allergies, because it can take up to 4 weeks to fully work. Although well tolerated, common side effects include itching and burning of nasal passages, sneezing, headache and stomach pain. The only nasal mast cell stabilizer on the market is Nasalcrom (cromolyn sodium)and it is available over the counter.
