Noradrenergic Agents/Amphetamines

This class of drugs works to suppress the appetite. Amphetamines [methamphetamine, amphetamine, dextroamphetamine (Dexadrine), amphetamine/dextroamphentamine (Adderall)] are not recommended or approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss. Amphetamines have a high potential for abuse. Phenteramine (Adipex-P, Fastin, Ionamin, Zantryl) and deithylpropion (Tenuate, Tenuate Dospan) are also in this class and can be used short term for weight loss. Phenylpropanolamine was the only over-the-counter drug in this class, but it was removed from the market in November 2000 due to its possible association with stroke and bleeding of the brain.
