Combination Anti-Parkinson's Agents
Stalevo is a combination of carbidopa, levodopa, and entacapone, three medications that are commonly used in treatment of Parkinson's disease.
Each ingredient of Stalevo exerts its action differently. Current evidence shows that symptoms of Parkinson's disease are related to a lack of dopamine in the brain. Levodopa is an initial form of dopamine that can be converted to dopamine once it reaches the brain. Carbidopa is given alongside levodopa to hinder the breakdown of levodopa, making more levodopa available to the brain. Entacapone has no antiparkinson effects when taken without levodopa/carbidopa. When entacapone and levodopa/carbidopa are taken together, the result is greater availability of levodopa to the brain.
