Treatment Options

Miscellaneous Agents for Urinary Incontinence

    Imipramine

Imipramine is used primarily to treat depression, but it has also been shown to increase the capacity of the bladder. It may decrease the incidence of urinary incontinence for some individuals.

    Pseudoephedrine

A decongestant that is available as a generic and in products such as Sudafed and Suphedrine, pseudoephedrine may help to relieve stress incontinence by tightening the sphincter muscle. It may increase blood pressure, however, and cause side effects such as insomnia or nervousness. Individuals who have glaucoma, heart conditions, kidney disease, or prostate conditions should not use pseudoephedrine. Even though it is available without a prescription, pseudoephedrine must be requested from the pharmacist. The amount of pseudoephedrine that an individual can purchase at one time is limited.
