Theophyllines
Some of the first drugs discovered to be effective for asthma control, theophylline and related drugs have been used to treat asthma since at least the early 1900s. Exactly how they work is still unknown, but taking them relaxes the airways and decreases inflammation. However, theophylline must be taken daily, it does not start to work for several weeks, it may cause a number of side effects, it can interact with many other drugs, and it remains in the body for a long time after it has been stopped. Additionally, effective blood levels of theophylline are close to harmful levels. Therefore, doses may be changed often and patients taking it require frequent blood testing. Theophylline is now usually reserved for add-on use when newer asthma medications are not enough to control symptoms. Drugs in the class
