What are the risk factors?
Since the causes of schizophrenia are not fully understood, it is difficult to ascertain what factors can put a person at increased risk for the mental illness. Evidence points toward a genetic link for the illness. In fact, a child of a parent with schizophrenia has about a 10% chance of developing the mental illness and a 40% chance of developing it if both parents have schizophrenia. An identical twin of a person with schizophrenia is at the highest risk--a 40% to 50% chance of developing the illness.
