What are the risk factors?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is not a contagious disease, meaning that it cannot be passed from individual to individual through physical contact. Because it is inherited, an individual is at risk for developing CF if his or her parents are both carriers of the defective gene. CF also occurs more frequently in various ethnic population groups. For example, individuals of Northern European descent have a higher incidence of CF. In comparison, Hispanic-, African-, and Asian-Americans populations have smaller chances of having the disease.
