IBS Health Risk Assessment

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder characterized by abdominal pain and cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. It affects as many as 1 in 5 adults. IBS is more common in women than men and usually begins before the age of 35. IBS can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort, however it does not cause permanent damage to the intestines and will not increase the risk of more severe disease, such as colon cancer. Most people with mild IBS can control their symptoms with diet modifications and stress management techniques, however, more severe cases may require medications.

We've designed a quick and easy checklist to help you determine if you have signs and symptoms similar to those of IBS. This checklist is not meant to diagnose you with IBS, because doctors must use specific criteria and procedures to do so. This checklist can be used as a tool to help you determine if you should seek advice from your doctor.

Check each of the following boxes that apply to you.

For at least 12 weeks (does not have to be 12 consecutive weeks) during the past 12 months:

I have suffered from abdominal pain or discomfort that is accompanied by diarrhea.
I have suffered from abdominal pain or discomfort that is accompanied by constipation.
